The 1920s saw the dawn of radio broadcasting, prohibition, a new movie palace in Joliet, Lindbergh's epic flight, Babe Ruth's 60th home run, and a tragic stock market crash.
On these pages the Joliet Public Library presents images of stories from the Joliet Herald News that show what Jolietans read about major events, and ads that illustrate what life was like in Joliet during the 1920s.
The 1920 Election
The 1920 election was historic in that it was the first election where the women of Illinois were able to vote for all offices. Below are links to images of stories about Joliet and Will County women's participation in that election.
Lindbergh's Flight
The Stock Market Crash
A book titled The 20th Century: An Illustrated History of Our Lives and Times notes that "by noon on Thursday, October 24, 1929, the financial boom of the 1920s lay shattered on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Thousands of Americans, from poor widows to tycoons, had lost their life savings; by day's end eleven financiers had committed suicide."
Below are links to stories that appeared in the Joliet Herald-News on Black Thursday, and links to pages with stories and headlines that appeared in the Herald-News on subsequent days.
