Joliet Remembers
The 1950s

The 1950s were an exciting time for the City of Joliet. During the decade the population of the city grew by more than 15,000 people.  Joliet Memorial Stadium, the  Joliet Armory, St. Raymond Cathedral, and St. Francis Academy (now Joliet Catholic Academy) were built. The first stores at Hillcrest Shopping Center opened.

Elsewhere, the first astronauts were chosen, and the Russians launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite.  The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation of elementary and high school students was unconstitutional.

Below you will find links to images of newspaper stories, headlines, and ads that illustrate what Jolietans read about major events of the 1950s, where they shopped, and how they lived.
