The Friends of  the Joliet Public Library is a non-profit organization made up of people who love the library.

We Need a Friend Like You!

What types of activities and fund-raising does the group have?

  • Friends host book sales each year
  • Friends sell sweatshirts for $20, T-shirts for $10, book bags for $12, and spill-proof travel mugs for $5.

Do I receive any special privileges as a Friend?

  • Before each book sale, you will get an invitation to come in an hour earlier to get first choice of book sale materials, and a chance to win a door prize. 
  • You will receive monthly library newsletters.
  • If you attend the monthly meetings, you will get a chance to win some donated door prizes.

How do you know about Friends meetings?

  • Meetings and events are announced in the library newsletter and schedules are planned a year in advance.

What types of donations and endowments do Friends accept?

  • Friends accept donations of books, music cassettes, videocassettes, DVD's, and CD's. Children's items in good condition are always needed.    
  • Monetary donations in addition to regular membership dues are very welcome. These can be for memorials or any purpose(s) you specify. 
  • Friends appreciate being remembered in wills through endowments and bequests. 

How can I participate in library activities?

  • You can help with book sales and other special fund raising events.
  • You can volunteer and work at the library.
  • You can be an active member and come to regular monthly meetings.

How have Friends helped the library?

  • Since 1968, the Friends have donated over $80,000 to the Joliet Public Library.
  • Friends have sponsored library programs, helped with disaster recovery after the 1989 fire, and provided volunteer workers for library programs and events.  Money earned at fundraisers has been used to purchase books, records, CD's, computer equipment and software, and library furniture.  We have provided matching funds for state grants such as the Illinois State Library grant for children's books.
